Plans for recreation center unveiled

Pictured above is an architectural rendering made by Summit Engineering Inc. of a new recreation center which will be built where the old A&P building used to be located beside Dairy Queen in Whitesburg.

The 42,000-square-foot structure will include a six-lane bowling alley, an arcade, a walking track and an exercise area. Three side-by-side basketball courts and an enclosed batting cage are also planned.

The $7 million project calls for multipurpose rooms as well as meeting and party rooms. A play place for younger children will have slides and a ball pit.

A three-story high climbing wall, which will be located in the front of the building, will be enclosed in glass.

Geo-thermal energy will be used to heat and cool the building.

Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward said groundbreaking ceremonies for the recreation center will take place later this month and construction could be completed by spring 2011.
