Witnesses say cars were going fast before mishap

State police say Neon Rescue ambulance personnel saw two cars traveling at a high rate of speed just before one of the cars went off the roadway and struck a tree in Haymond Saturday, killing the driver and passenger.

Jimmy Woods Jr., 19, of Burdine, lost control of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt he was operating and went off the eastbound shoulder of KY 805 in Haymond around 12:46 p.m. on Nov. 12, Kentucky State Police said. Police said the car hit a tree before coming to a rest in a creek.

Woods and passenger Whitney Griffin, 22, of McRoberts, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner’s Office.
