Shoebox ministry kicks off Sept. 16

The 2012 kickoff event for Operation Christmas Child will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 16 at First Baptist Church in Whitesburg.

The southeast Kentucky countdown event for the shoebox ministry will be held during the evening church service.

The kickoff event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome and Operation Christmas Child Staff Member Kate Tanis will speak. Promotional items and decorative shoeboxes to use for shoebox preparation will be available.

Operation Christmas Child, which is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, provides gift-filled shoeboxes to children ages 2-14 living in difficult circumstances all over the world. Shoeboxes may contain hygiene items, school supplies, clothing and toys. Since 1993, the organization has distributed more than 80 million shoebox gifts.
