To a certain person: You hold grudges and you feel very hurt. You make excuses and reasons why you don’t do what you should do. You know you are in the wrong. The very person who you liked and looked up to has gone on to Jesus. He is walking on the streets of gold. As long as you hold on to grudges and excuses, you are not going to get to be with him. If you want to get back with your friend, you need to change your way. He didn’t put on a show for everybody. He did what he wanted to do. As far as I can tell he was a pretty good Christian. At some point a zebra will show its stripes, but he was the same all of the time. You shouldn’t hold grudges and you shouldn’t be hurt. You should be happy for him. I know when you get older it takes a toll on you. You can’t do what you used to do. Life seems to be taking a toll on you. Everybody has wrinkles. Not everyone can afford to get tummy tucks and facelifts. We’re still who we are no matter what. All I know is you will be left behind over something so childish. You can’t just thing about yourself. You have to work toward a goal.

I have a comment for Magistrate Wayne Fleming. You said the Letcher County Recreation Center is funded with taxpayers’ money and everybody ought to get in free. How come you haven’t been to the Jenkins City Council meeting to let all of the kids in the new swimming pool free? That is being built with taxpayers’ dollars, too.

Many times I have sent stuff to Speak Your Piece for the purpose of gouging a person who needs it. Sometimes I send some stupid nonsense just to add a little humor to your column, but this time this is some serious stuff. I was reading my horoscope in The Mountain Eagle (even though I don’t believe horoscopes I still read them for curiosity). This particular one made my day. The horoscope for Sagittarius said, ‘You might be upset by some of your critics, but most of your associates continue to keep faith in your ability to get the job done and done well.’ This reminded me of a famous quote by Theodore Roosevelt that I would like to share with your readers: ‘It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.’

I’d like to know why Brian Damron is never wearing a uniform when he arrests somebody. Every time I see him he is in plain clothes and always has his girlfriend with him. Everybody else is in uniform.

I think it is a shame that the county’s recent budget cuts include decreases in funding to the senior citizens centers and sheriff ’s department. I think Letcher County is getting fed up with Judge Jim Ward’s actions. I wonder what he will be cutting next.

People should get together and do something about these high power bills. It would be good if a committee could be formed to check on the price of these big windmills and put them on the tops of these mountains so each person could pay about $150 a month instead of $800 or more. It looks like we’re going to have to take care of our own selves here in the eastern part of Kentucky since no one else is going to.

Did everybody hear about the Hatfields and McCoys and The Beverly Hillbillies of Grays Branch having their battle last Sunday? I heard Annie Oakley and her husband chased a teenaged girl down the road with a gun.

To a car salesman from Whitesburg: You must like your women like you like your cars — with a lot of miles on them.

I think it is time that Whitesburg’s Bike Nite organizers allow hotrods to be included in the event so we can show off our hotrods in downtown Whitesburg. I’m not talking about ordinary junk vehicles. I’m talking about cars from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and some even from the ’90s. I’m thinking about fixing up a hotrod myself. I’d like to bring it up to Bike Nite. They ought to call it Bike and Street Rod Nite. That’s how we could get more people to join us. I love motorcycles. I also love street rods. They are cool, too. They are American culture. I really dig it.

To Letcher Fire Chief Gary Rogers: Nobody was talking about you wearing your cap in the court meeting. We were talking about you rocking the podium. Nobody even paid any attention to you wearing a cap. It’s the ones from up in Jenkins who were wearing caps. I hadn’t noticed you wearing a cap. We just wanted you to stop rocking the podium. You were making us seasick. Some of them ought to learn to take their caps off so we don’t look like ignorant people in these hills.

They’re back at it again, aren’t they, people? Playing cards, drinking and all of that stuff. It’s a shame that they won’t do anything about that. I just don’t understand that, people. They won’t do anything about things when we need it done. I wish they would do something about this poker house, close it down or whatever.

If Wayne Fleming decides to run against Jim Ward for the office of county judge/executive, Magistrate Fleming will beat Judge Ward by a margin of at least two-to-one no matter how much money the natural gas industry pours into the race on behalf of Ward. Please run for office, Mr. Fleming. This county needs you.

People we don’t even know get out and burn garbage, plastic and tires. They about killed us last night. I’d like to know what I can do about this problem. I don’t mind them burning leaves and wood, but this burning of garbage I don’t like. If they would just put it in bags, the garbage man would pick it up. They are so sorry that they won’t do that. They would rather burn it beside the creek banks. The last time they burned garbage you would have had to take a knife to cut through the smoke and the smell.

This comment concerns a smart aleck nurse in Whitesburg who works for a private doctor’s office: Since she has been working there I know she has run off two or three people. Now I’m gone, and if my husband isn’t gone, too, I’ll boot his clothes out and he can go down to the doctor’s office and stay. Also, that smart aleck mouth of hers is going to get her in trouble.

Pray for the people of Oklahoma? I don’t get it. Seems like God has already made abundantly clear how much he cares about them.

It’s a shame that one certain man and one certain woman hang together and hold hands and sell drugs while her husband is at work. This man is at this woman’s house I bet you 30 times every single day. Her husband is too stupid to realize that she is fooling with that other man. I don’t know if he doesn’t care or if he is just too stupid. The police won’t do anything about it. Police have been called three or four times and they won’t do anything to her.

They say that mountaintop removal will provide flat land for industrial development. How come all of this land is flat from stripping it and hasn’t been developed?

I don’t want to hear the county officials ranting and raving about how they need to tighten up their budget. It’s kind of sickening to me. Jim Ward and the people who work for him did their best to get the coal companies out of here and the gas companies in here, and now they are missing that coal severance tax and they are starting to put liens on people’s property and everything else. To be honest with you, I worked hard to pay for my property and I don’t think I owe the county jack.

Could the postmaster at the Mayking Post Office give me some help with cars trying to park up against the lobby door? Some elderly person is going to get run over, and I’d rather it not be me.

I’d like to know how many people over here on Deane would like to file a lawsuit against the coal company here. Where the old Bethlehem tipple was they keep the road watered down, but they put so much on it that it throws water up on your car and windows. They don’t do it right. They do it as if it’s a joke to everybody. If anybody is interested, put it in next week’s Speak Your Piece.

Where is this embankment and this poor old crippled woman? Why don’t you tell exactly who and what you are talking about? You might just get busted in the face. If those people own that property they can do whatever they want. Why don’t you have the gall to go to that person instead of putting your comment in Speak Your Piece, you lowlife trash?

A great injustice is being done here in the eastern section of Kentucky with the advent of the 4-wheeler generation (ATVs). It is their misuse of the pleasure vehicle that is bringing undeserved consequences to most age groups that compose our mountain heritage. I am sending you a copy of a letter sent to a law firm asking for its consideration of a lawsuit in the interest of elderly people who have to put up with the relentless, constant violations of traffic laws and regulations. Old people cannot just up and leave their homes just to satisfy the whims of children and money-hungry vehicle salespersons. It does not do any good to write the politicians and members of the legislature about this problem; they just write you back and say that they agree with you, but cannot do anything about it. It is a local matter. However, after 1975, the state of Kentucky was supposed to conduct all judiciary matters that would occur at the county and local government level in district court. What little they do now at the local level for the good of old people is diminutive compared to the ability of county government in the judiciary arena of pre-1975 justice system. An investigation should be conducted to find out why none of the traffic rules and regulations regarding ATVs are being subjected to judiciary revue, let alone having had any convictions and collections of fines payments. Money received for fines on ATV violations could be used to augment tax collections. The taxpayers already have enough burden. This is sent to you anonymously because I am afraid of being harmed or burned out if the parties involved were to find out about it. Would you consider taking a case where the victim has been injured to the point of nerve sickness by young people on ATVs operating these vehicles deliberately in a manner as to intimidate old people? There are a lot of elderly people who live along the main highway in order to be able to get back and forth to the doctor as well as to other important places. Young people — ages between 12 and 35 years old — know that, and get a kick out of harassing and ‘bullying’ people who are unable to take up for themselves. It has been tried, and the law will not do anything to stop it. Some older people take prescription pain medicine in order to deal with the problem. It would appear that a ‘Class Action Suit’ lodged against the manufacturers and sales companies of ATVs would be appropriate in the situation described above. There are probably more ATVs than there are cars on Kentucky highways, and a great number of them are misused to a far greater than there are ‘guns’ misused. If they are going to regulate something, they should regulate noise-making ATVs as well. They do just as much nerve damage (psychologically, that is). This is a much bigger problem than it appears. A lot of people are making a lot of money off of the deliberate misuse of these ATVs and a lot of old people are suffering as a result of it. Somebody should be responsible for the pain and misery involved. I will call you by phone concerning this letter.

Why is it that everyone already knows who will be the new superintendent of Letcher County Schools? Why have a committee when politics control the vote? Money talks.

How do I make a complaint about one of the court workers? I was in the elevator when a certain woman got on and was talking to some other woman. They were talking about a friend’s nephew. He is only 14 years old, and they talked about him like a dog. He has problems, but I thought they were not allowed to discuss things like that when it involved a child under 18 going to court. She was sickening.

Tick. Tick. Tick. The clock is ticking. Time is winding down. Soon the Letcher County Board of Education must name the next superintendent. Will the board members see the light and do the right thing this time or will they be blinded by the light and stumble around in the dark like they almost always do?

It’s awful when you try to get along with everybody, but then you’ve always got somebody that will get some thug who will want to start trouble in Speak Your Piece.

Stand up, Terry Cornett. Let your voice be heard on the Letcher County Board of Education. Cast your vote with the two new board members and let’s start a new era of administration in the Letcher County School System. Your vote is now the deciding vote. Use it wisely. Let’s put the education of children where it should have always been — the first priority.

I know a certain person who is trading Meals on Wheels dinners for a bologna sandwich. Every time they have spaghetti or macaroni and cheese, this other person swaps the Meals on Wheels person a bologna sandwich for the meal on the wheel. Sometimes it is thick bologna with a slice of tomato thrown in. I think they should take away Meals on Wheels from this person and take them both to court. This is fraud and a Class D felony. They could get five to 10 years and a big, old fine on top of that. They better watch out.

I live in Ohio, but grew up in Perry and Letcher counties. My mamaw’s name was Delia Holbrook and my papaw’s name was Leonard Kincer. I’m looking for some pictures to put in my genealogy book. I’m looking for a picture of the old Kona school, the Kona coal camp and the old Mc- Cauley’s store near the old school. Hi, hello and howdy friends. If you are outraged and shocked about the IRS and the U.S. Justice Department spying on conservative groups and the Associated Press, you should be enraged and irate about the people and agencies who spy and keep tabs on you. By using Facebook and Twitter, without most of you even knowing it, you are giving up your rights to privacy. Everything about you such as your likes and dislikes, books you read, medical issues, your ideologies and politics, and facts about your loved ones can easily be accessed from your social media accounts through Google and other search engines. How many of you know someone who had applied for a job, only to be denied for that job because of what was on their Facebook account? Everyone is complaining about violations of privacy, but it’s a shame how you let others take advantage of your freedom of speech, use technology to capitalize off of you and exploit you through various social media accounts. The information from these social media accounts is sold to other agencies, and God knows who else, to build a profile, size you up, or even use that information against you. How can this be legal? Why isn’t anyone complaining about that? Oh well, I guess you can’t expect to keep something that you pay to give away in the first place — think about it. You can be the best you can in this world, not saying anything or bothering anybody, but you still have low-life scum running their mouth to somebody. They never seem to pay for nothing they do. I wished I could be there when they stand before God and He rejects them. The screaming and begging will begin, then they will have eternity to think about what they have done to certain people. They’ll get what they deserve then.
