We are sick and tired of the bears and the state or whoever bringing more bears into our woods here in Lewis’s Creek. Our children can’t even play in their own yards on account of the danger of coming into contact with a bear. It wasn’t too long ago when we used to play in these mountains and a bear was the last thing we had to worry about. Our only worry was getting our hides tanned for staying out after dark. We would like to find out what can be done about this problem before a child is hurt or killed. Surely we can do something to help with this problem. If there are any politicians out their in Letcher County that we can work with, it sure would do a lot for us as voters and it sure wouldn’t hurt them either in the coming election. Thank you. Signed, Not A Bear Hater, Just A Worried Grandmother.

If the police and courts will simply enforce the law against felons associating with felons, the drug and crime problem will be cut in half overnight.

About seven or eight years ago, I worked at the Food World IGA in Whitesburg. At that time in my life there were many horrible situations that I was facing. I had never been saved, baptized, and I didn’t attend church. Let’s just say I was about as far away from God as it gets. There was a lady who came through my line very often — long dark hair, glasses. I never knew her name, but she was someone who shopped there frequently. After I would hand her the receipt, she would always look at me with sincerity and tell me, ‘Jesus loves you.’ She did this every single time she shopped there. I don’t know if she did it with any of the other cashiers, but she never failed to tell me every time she came through my line. Of course, at that point in my life it never phased me. Or so I thought. Now I am a Christian and very proud to say so. God has done many wonderful things in my life. My hope from leaving this comment is that either she or someone she knows will see this and let her know how much I truly appreciate her telling me that. Even though at the time I never knew that it would stay with me this long, it did. I just want her to know that her persistence and her dedication to God is still an inspiration to me. I hope she is out there somewhere. I hope she sees this and I pray that she continues to share with people how much Jesus loves them. Thank you so much. May God bless each and every one of you.

This is for the greedy person whining about his or her kid not getting enough from his baseball coach: If that coach is like most, he or she spent a lot if his or her own money on uniforms and equipment. I know he or she spent many hours without pay teaching and guiding those kids. And put up with a lot of abuse from some of the kids and their parents. So, it’s you who ought to be doing something to show appreciation for your coach, not bitching about how you didn’t get enough. You should be shamed of yourself. Why don’t you pitch in for trophies, if you think your kid deserves one for not winning anything, or a pizza party?

Coal is not your friend. Big coal acts like they created the unmined minerals tax, but they really fought it tooth and nail. Extracted coal was not taxed until 1972. The returned tax is not enough to begin to repair the roads damaged by overweight coal trucks, and the railroad crossings in coal-haul areas would never be tolerated in other, more affluent regions. If coal were really the salvation of eastern Kentucky, why are we consistently ranked as one of the most poverty-stricken areas of the U.S.? Big coal destroys the land, the resources, and the people, and ships the mineral and the money to the out-of-state fat-cats who own the companies.

To all you fine crime fighters of the terrible pills who are only hurting the old and people who cannot get to sit for hours and pay $500 dollars for $20 dollars worth of pills at am embezzling sorry place called a pain clinic: What a wondrous joke. Thanks. You have done a great job of getting heroin into Kentucky — exactly as someone stated you would in 2010 in Speak Your Piece. And just so you will know, your Social Security and Medicare funds are being used up in the process of fighting the so called ‘War on Drugs’ that is even a more pathetic deal than Prohibition was. Here is your cost that you can research yourself if you have doubt. The drug war has cost $4 trillion since 1986 alone at a rate of $500 dollars per second, yes a second. It has resulted in at least 400,000 deaths per year from the war, not the drugs. Any questions?

I just read the Speak Your Piece section of The Mountain Eagle and you published an article that I had written and I thank you for publishing it. The article concerned a previous caller who said he/she would vote for Hillary Clinton because she was a woman. The caller went on to say how a great president Bill Clinton was because he reduced the deficient. In my article I just said that I assumed the caller meant deficit, but I was not picking on the caller. I think you assumed I was, but I was not. You went on to chastise me at the end of my article for picking on the poor caller and told me I had made a mistake by misplacing the apostrophe in the word (it’s) leaders. You said I should have placed the apostrophe after the ‘s’ in (its). And you are right. You also said you corrected it for me and I could thank you later. However, if you will go back and read the article you did not place the apostrophe after the letter ‘s’ in (its) like you said you did. Spell check or proofreading did not work again, so I guess neither of us is perfect and I do not think I should thank you later.

(Actually, there was no need for an apostrophe after the ‘s’ in that situation. And please accept my apology for misinterpreting your comments to the original caller.)

Carl Hurley was great. But a lot of people should take notice of these things: Not everyone is of the same religion. Not everyone went to UK — not even most of their fans. Not everyone likes to pay good money to hear partisan political attacks. Not everyone eats red meat.

.

Does a certain woman who works in Whitesburg know her old man is having an affair with a girl she grew up with? I think it is a shame that he is doing her this way.

.

This is to the two pieces of trash who killed Michael Hogg: If you aren’t the cowards that I think you are, why are you in solitary confinement?

.

If I told you I was a heart doctor, would you believe me? You better not. Just because I say I am a heart doctor, it doesn’t mean that I am. You better go get a second opinion. You better not believe me.

.

This is to all of the voters in District Four: We need to elect a new magistrate and we definitely need to elect a new constable. He has been constable for over 20 years and he has never ever done his job as constable. He just collects the money and rides around like a motorcycle gang.

.

I’d like to respond to the guy who is running for sheriff of Letcher County with the logo ‘Yes, we can.’ I can’t vote for you, sir, because we are trying to clean the county up. You are just pitiful.

.

I’d just like to say if anybody is hunting for some fine carpenters you need to contact Alvin Brown or Roger Eldridge. They do real good work. I’d just like to let the people around here know in case they need some work done.

.

The hidden problem regarding drug and substance abuse is that if you lose your medicine, can’t find your medicine or if it gets stolen, you have to just until you can refill your prescription. Innocent people suffer.

.

I wish the mayor of Neon would care about Neon like she does Kentucky basketball. If she did, the Danny Kincer Field wouldn’t be in the shape that it is. There is glass in the parking lot, no bleachers and grass has grown up. There is a swamp on it. She should get her act together if they have so much money in the bank and fix that field.

.

To the people of Letcher County: It’s time that we all rebel against crooked government, the power company, Letcher County Judge/ Executive Jim Ward’s office, EQT and high gas prices.

.

Attention, Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb: We have waited eight years for you to do what you promised and the county is worse. Are you still watching the drugs and stealing going on? You have never done anything. Why would we re-elect you?

.

I’d like to let the people in Gordon know about the fire department trying to get rid of the big tanker. If we get rid of the 4,000-gallon tanker and go down to a 1,600-gallon tanker, insurance in Gordon will go up 20 percent. You need to call your fire commissioner.

.

My husband and I were discussing the way the county judge is doing. During our time, we sat under Dr. B.F. Wright, Sandy Adams, Arthur Dixon, James Caudill, Robert Collins, Carroll Smith, Ruben Watts and Estill Blair. I have never known one of them to make a motion or second a motion. The only time they ever voted was to break a tie. What is this county a coming to?

.

I think it’s a shame that the county’s coal severance tax pays for the women at the Ermine Senior Citizens Center to operate a quilting business. They quilt quilts and sell them while the county is paying their electric bill.

.

I want everyone to know that I really appreciate what Magistrate Wayne Fleming has done for our community and I hope everyone in our area remembers his work. He fought for us when no one else would. Thanks for trying to keep everyone honest, Wayne. You will receive everyone’s vote in my family, including mine.

.

In regard to the comment about the county court clerk, I seriously doubt that Letcher County has ever had or will have in the future a more honest county court clerk than the current county court clerk.

.

This is to the Hollywood fellow: First of all, I have never ridden a motorcycle in my life. I have never stolen anything. If I did steal something, it wouldn’t be a motorcycle. I am proud of you for getting up at 4 a.m. and earning a living. And you say not so much for you. I worked 46 years in the coal mines. I think I did a pretty good job. I paid my dues. There is one thing I will say good about you. You get up at 4 a.m., go to work and pay my social security. You are one fine young man.

.

I have called earlier and requested in Speak Your Piece about the TV listings and they said they were bringing them back soon. Do you exactly know when soon will be? I miss it so much.

.

To a certain person: You asked me what could you do for me and I said nothing. You asked me what do you want out of me and I said nothing. So now I’ll tell you exactly what I want out of you. Nothing. You are no longer any relation, kin or anything to me. You are dead to me. So that is what I want out of you. Goodbye.

.

Letcher County Judge/ Executive Jim Ward is the poster child for all of the gas companies. The gas companies are the coal industry’s worst enemy.

.

How come the 4- H agents never come to the schools like they are supposed to do? I have had two appointments with that one woman and she just won’t come. Someone please tell me who to call.

.

OMG! How funny that two women your age went to a concert and took selfies. If you all knew how funny you all look.

.

To a certain person: We’ve already figured out where you got the money to get your little son out of jail the other night. It’s the same place you got it before.

.

To whom it may concern: Why don’t you finally admit that you cannot outdo the Midnight Phantom. You are alcoholics and drug addicts. You are certainly not a legal scholar. This is not the Midnight Phantom speaking. Keep on trucking.

.

It surprises me that the person who commented in last week’s Speak Your Piece said he saw PVA Randy Hall in his office with his legs crossed. I have never been able to catch him in his office.

.

People who hate other people need to find Jesus and He will give them love. I am praying for them. God bless them. May Jesus keep them. Amen. And P.S., Jesus says to help people, but some won’t do that.

.

If I catch whoever stole my radiator out of my air conditioner, you will be prosecuted.

.

An honest day’s work will not hurt you. It will make you feel better about yourself.

.

Is it just me or is there anyone else out there who ever sees any constables out on the highways anywhere? I know that I haven’t seen any constables anywhere and I’m wondering if it is just me or if that is just the way it is.

.

Attention, Sheriff Danny Webb: Your deputy has been seen taking down election signs for Randall Adams for sheriff. If you don’t get the signs back up there will be a picture published in the paper. Don’t play dirty. Play clean. We need clean, nice people in this world who want to make a difference in the community, and who actually care.

.

I hear a certain facility is put to good use by the night shift. No wonder the patients are being neglected. P.S. It must be true what they say about blondes.

.

To the politician who went on the Government Channel in support of the Letcher County Recreation Center: You said, ‘Raise your taxes.’ That is how much you wanted to help at-risk kids, yet you broke up the home of a little boy you coach. You even testified in court against his dad, saying you are in a relationship with his mommy. Come August there will be a petition presented to the school board asking for your dismissal.
