When are the parents in McRoberts going to realize they are depriving their children of a better education? Every effort possible should be taken to withdraw from the Jenkins School system. State report cards of Kentucky schools show Jenkins in the twenty-one percentile and Letcher County Schools in the seventy-nine percentile. Jenkins is in the bottom ten percent; Letcher Schools are shown as profi- cient/progressing. Students travel farther to school by attending Burdine School than Martha Jane Potter. The explanation of ‘the scores do not show everything’ is getting old. Please, for your children’s sake, explore the possibility of joining the Letcher County School System and pay less taxes while your children get a better education.

.

It really shouldn’t be asking too much for our elected county officials to at least attempt to use proper grammar when their fiscal court meetings are being televised on their own propaganda television station. When people who hold these leadership jobs, especially the county judge/ executive, use poor grammar it makes us all look and sound like dumb hillbillies. No wonder we in eastern Kentucky are the butt of jokes elsewhere. There is nothing cute or down home about a public official using bad grammar. While none of us can help our mountain drawl accents, those who are entrusted to run our county can and should use proper English when in a public forum.

.

I listened to a roundtable discussion the other evening and the topic was the greatest threats to our country. The individual topics were our water supply and quality, terrorists with access to nuclear material, our oil supply, our food supply, and the speed of technological advancement. Politicians need to be addressing these things. Put some pressure on them, write them a letter. For example, did you know that the average meal travels 1,400 miles to make it to your plate? Locally grown vegetable and fruits and locally produced meats and dairy products would be great for our county’s economy and health. I love the local farmer’s market. Bye-bye factory produced fast food. Let’s have local restaurants using local foodstuffs. It’s tastier and also great for the local economy. Go local.

.

Mitch McConnell is really starting to shine in this race for the U.S. Senate, while Alison Lundergan Grimes is looking more and more like the inexperienced person she is. The Senate will be going Republican in November and we in Letcher County and the rest of Kentucky need to make sure we vote to keep Mr. McConnell in office so that he can lead our state and nation to better things. The question is pretty simple: Do we want to replace the man who would be the leader of the Senate with a rookie who will back Harry ‘Coal Makes You Sick’ Reid and Obama? The answer is even simpler: No.

.

I would like to thank Jenkins City Councilman Rick Damron for being brave and standing up for the people in Jenkins. He did his job and stood up to the other council members and the mayor. Now, the rest of you Jenkins officials need to do the same or go home. Let some good honest people lead this city. Thank you again, Rick Damron, for leading Jenkins in the right direction for a change.

.

This message is for John Wyatt: Stay in that race for Jenkins Mayor. You are telling the truth and the city can’t take it. You are a nice gentleman and you know more than you’re telling. The debt is over our heads, people are moving out and this is a retirement town. We need good leadership.

.

Who was talking ugly to the teacher? Just wondering.

.

David Narramore is not fooling anyone. We all know him, stand behind him, and support him. We are ready for a change. He will be honest, he is smart, and he is very concerned for the future of Whitesburg. He will work will the courthouse and police department. He will be nice to everyone and not just a few. I believe David Narramore a good God-fearing man and will lead this city in a direction that is beneficial to all the hardworking taxpayers — Democrats, Republicans, professionals and all within these city limits. He will work relentlessly to achieve his goals and make Whitesburg the showplace of eastern Kentucky. Asking for your support to help us all. Thank you.

.

After reading the latest edition of Speak Your Piece it has become pretty obvious that almost all the postings that say really nasty things about the current Jenkins mayor are coming from one family in Burdine. Evidently they don’t want to see any progress made in the city and they must have a pretty big grudge against the mayor. I doubt any of the actual family members could get elected to anything.

.

I live in Whitesburg, and David Narramore is not my choice for mayor. In fact, the negative way in which he is running his campaign reminds me a good deal of his friend Mitch McConnell — a lot of half truths and innuendo. His ‘vision’ to move the city forward is nothing that isn’t already being done under the current mayor. Don’t let David Narramore take the city backward. This election is too important. Stick with Mayor Craft. He is the one who has dragged Whitesburg into the 21st Century.

.

Wake up, Whitesburg voters. We hear the two candidates running against Mayor Craft say they will do away with the occupational tax. With this tax all the people who work in Whitesburg and get the benefits of our city help pay for it whether they live here or not. This tax helps those of us who live in Whitesburg and those of us who pay property tax in Whitesburg because it is not just us paying the costs of running the city. Also, retired people and those who live in the city but work outside the city don’t pay the tax. Do away with the occupational tax and our property tax and other taxes will surely have to go up for all of us residents.

.

Want to know what Mitch McConnell will do if we vote him in for six more years along with his billionaire supporters? Easy. Forget what he says, just look how he votes and what he blocks in the Senate. He says, of course, he’s for working folks trying to support a family but he blocks raising the minimum wage to even near a fair level. He tried to block the law that let thousands of us afford health insurance for the first time. Ditto on cutting help for our veterans and our kid’s schools. But he’s great on protecting corporations that ignore mine safety for miners and deny insurance for black lung. And if he hits the Senate jackpot, he’s got an agenda: gut Medicare and privatize it for corporate profit. And of course, keep the millions in tax breaks for big oil, the big banks, etc., because they’re putting up the millions to buy this election. Don’t believe it? Who do we think is paying for all those smear ads against Alison Grimes? She’s got my vote. We need her.

.

Two school board members are up for re-election in Jenkins and both have served full terms. Durward Narramore has been chairman of the board for many years and Eileen Sanders has served a full term. She is a former teacher and he has chaired the Kentucky State School Boards Association, which doesn’t say much at all about that organization. Jenkins board members should be embarrassed by the performance of the Jenkins Schools which are now rated seventh worst in the state and one of a dozen that are under the 10 percentile rank. We’ve had enough. The saddest thing is that most of the people in Jenkins really don’t care other than the thought of Jenkins kids going into the county school system. Neither Narramore nor Sanders should be re-elected.

.

A certain grocery is a good store but the employees are treated badly by high management. And I don’t mean the store manager, because you couldn’t ask for a better one. I’m talking about the supervisors and owners. There is no excuse to treat your workers poorly, because without them you wouldn’t have a store. Thank you.

.

I’m a former employee at a certain store in Whitesburg and I was let go for not being dedicated enough — that’s what a person said — although I offered to step down a month ago and was told no. But they wait one month and let me go. By the way, I have two kids to raise and bills to pay and the person that did this to me claims to go to church. Well, I think she needs to go back.

.

Mitch McConnell is disgusting. In his ad that claims Grimes is controlled by ‘ radical anti- coal activists’ the footage shows a woman bad-mouthing ‘her’ (unnamed), but the poster in the background is for ‘Beshear/Mongiardo.’ That election was almost eight years ago. Mitch and Republicans in general are getting desperate.

.

You know, its took me a while to figure things out but some facts about what happened to my marriage are: A certain woman who works at a medical supply store in Floyd County has been having an affair with my husband for a long time. She finally divorced her husband on his deathbed to continue destroying mine. What do you call a woman like this? Both claim to be Christians, and my husband preaches at a church in Pike County. I have proof they have been sneaking into each other’s bedrooms and gone out of town so nobody knows. This will come back to haunt them. My husband has left me in devastation and they both are to blame. She chased him even before we were married. It proves one thing: You never get too old to be a whore or whorehopper. We really need to pray for these two hell bound people. Signed, his wife.

.

Thank goodness we finally have a Jenkins City councilman who will not rubber-stamp everything our silver-tongued mayor proposes. The problem is, it’s about three years too late. I will be passing out free brooms at the polling places in November so we can do a clean sweep of Jenkins City Hall. I attend some council meetings in person and watch some on television and some of the council members either don’t show up or sit there mum meeting after meeting. The approval rating of this mayor and council is at an all time low. Wake up, Jenkins voters. Our city is in a crisis and it is up to us voters to make some changes.

.

We want to thank Community Trust Bank and Food City for their donations to help with the Little Cowan Community School reunion. Thank you so much. We really had a good time. Thanks to all who came and helped celebrate.

.

To a woman who lives in Pistol City: Looks to me like you would have a little bit more decency to yourself besides putting all that nasty stuff on the Internet. You need to have decency for yourself, if not for then for your parents and your little niece. You need help. Quit putting that stuff on the Internet.

.

I think it is a shame that Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb is hiring people with tattoos all over them and they are driving around in police cars. I think it is a shame and a disgrace. The state police have to cover up their tattoos, but the county doesn’t.

.

I heard on the news that Walmart is canceling insurance coverage for part-time employees because it costs too much for Walmart. Do you really want to shop there? Do you really want to work there?

.

I’m still trying to figure out how you went from a lunchroom monitor to a secretary. They put you in charge of the whole school.

.

To a certain person: If you think I am hoarding strawberry energy drink, well maybe you need to stop drinking it out of a shot glass and put it in a 20-ounce bottle like a normal person. If you still want to report me to human resources, since when it is okay to promote and accept bribes from your coworkers just to submit a change request? Maybe you ought to ask them about that when you go up there to report me. I’m going to start hoarding all of the strawberry energy drink and leave you with the nasty peach tea. You know who you are.

.

With great change comes great pain. If you’re not ready for the great pain, you may not be ready for the great change.

.

You did a good job on the bridge. Thank you.

.

To the citizens of Jenkins: If you want an honest city government and would like to see a hospital back in Jenkins, I urge you to vote for Mr. Stevie Joe Litts. There are ways to get a hospital back in this town. There are people working on this. Remember the WYMT newscast one year ago in August. The mayor does not support it; those were his own words. Go and see the mayor’s response for yourself at www.wymt.com. The life saved could be your own or someone you love.

.

It’s clear that Senator Mitch McConnell knows how to vote no. For 30 years he has voted no on anything that would have helped the average person in Kentucky. By voting for six more years of the same thing, Kentuckians would not be voting against President Barack Obama, they would be voting against the citizens of Kentucky. Regardless of who wins the election, the president will be gone in two years. The senator you send to Washington will be there for six years.

.

If you don’t want to be friendly and wait on customers, then don’t be a cashier at the busiest store in Letcher County.

.

I agree with the caller who commented in last week’s Speak Your Piece about the county attorney. I myself have called several different occasions and couldn’t get in touch anybody. Jamie was a pretty good guy until he got county attorney. Now he doesn’t have time for anybody.

.

How can the American people have a 14 percent approval rating of Washington and send the same people back and expect change? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

.

One thing that I don’t understand during elections is that most of the time when you ask people what they want the two things they say are jobs and lower taxes. Take Jenkins Mayor G.C. Kincer for instance. I don’t know if he is a good candidate or not. I have no idea. I do know this. There is a new restaurant put in and a new swimming pool. There’s lots of people on the payroll, so it seems to me that he has done something right. I’m just saying that whatever his personal life is isn’t anyone’s business. I barely know the man. I do know what I have seen and, like I said, he seems probably the best choice. I say give him one more time to try to figure it all out.

.

To a certain person: If I were you and I was going to be looking for a handout or help, I would definitely go to my family or my church. I wouldn’t put a container in a grocery store and ask for money.

.

Obama is a joke.

.

I enjoy watching the Jenkins City Council meetings on the Letcher County government channel. It was more enjoyable watching it this week without all of the hee-hawing going on with one of the councilwomen. The mayor said all he has done that are good for the City of Jenkins, but he doesn’t tell what bad things he has done. He has taken $1 million worth of taxable property away from tax base. He has raised our power bills with a franchise tax that no other town has. Our TV bills have gone sky high. Our water bills have gone sky high. He doesn’t tell about that. We’ll never get out of debt.

.

I think that Mitch McConnell knows that if he told the truth he would lose this election. Like Dick Chaney (or was it Karl Rove?) said, we need to take over this country one congressman at a time. I hope we don’t fall for this.

.

If you keep giving him the money when he comes to the funeral home and you know he doesn’t give it to the church, you are just as guilty as he is.

.

Preacher man, if you are such good friends with him and his family, you know you are taking money from his girls, too. How can you show your face? How can your wife show her face at work? People know the way you treat people.

.

I keep seeing an old man running up and down the Whitesburg bypass. He runs every day, rain or shine. Guess what? One day he still is going to die.

.

I got a card from the Republican Party out of Frankfort yesterday urging my vote for Mitch McConnell. It had testimony from a coal miner. The thing that a friend of mine’s wife noticed on the card was that the cap was clean and it didn’t have any stickers on it. Coal miners wear black caps. What kind of coal miner has a clean white cap in Kentucky who really works in the mines? The people who take photos for politicians don’t know stuff like that.

.

Church is not the place to cut your fingernails if you respect God.

.

I went to a Letcher County place of business today to get a Coke and a Moon Pie. The owner was smoking in the business. I’m just letting people know that if you don’t like smoke, don’t go to this particular establishment across the mountain. Not trying to do the business any harm, but just letting people know that there is a smoking ordinance in Letcher County and you’re not supposed to smoke in businesses. I don’t appreciate a store being filled with smoke when I go in there to do business.

.

Wonder what happened to the current Jenkins mayor’s promises to have the area old Beth-Elkhorn shops removed. Is this another example of promises that have not been kept by the present mayor? The outof area owner left this mess for the citizens of Jenkins.

.

How many properties have been cleaned up through the blighted, deteriorated and nuisance ordinance that the City of Jenkins has on the books during the present mayor’s time in office? How many citizens live in that area where there are garage, fallen down houses, old trailers that are falling in? If an ordinance is on the books they should be enforced. Has the mayor been out of his offi ce and driven around the streets of Jenkins observing these problems?

.

Has the mayor of Jenkins observed that there are trees on Main Street that have died, especially the beautiful redbuds that bloom in spring? How much trouble is it to replace these, given the many employees the city has?

.

I’m so glad that they shut down Beckham Bates School. That’s the best thing to ever happen.

.

David Narramore is trying to win at all costs. One of his supporters who pays no employment tax has been at the Whitesburg nursing home. Narramore is running an ugly campaign, showing his true colors. I hope the Letcher County Election Board closely reviews all new voter registrations and absentee ballots.

.

Every time we watch the Jenkins City Council meetings we laugh and just loved seeing Councilmen Rick Damron and Robert Adams put the mayor, his current wife, his secretary and the councilwoman on the hot seat about the donation violation. These are the only two current members me and my family and friends are voting for because they are the only two who stand up for citizens and the waste of our tax dollars. It is time that we take back our city and stop the jokes about our administrators. Let’s take our city back and vote for someone we would not be embarrassed to head our city. I just cannot see Terry Braddock or John Wyatt on WYMT discussing a serious issue to represent our city. I have known Joe DePriest for 32 years and he is an honest person. I think he would do a great job. And no, I am no relation to him or his wife. I just think they are honest people that will not waste the tax money of the little or big people in our town.
