Science fairs planned

The Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will sponsor science fairs for students in the fifth grade in Harlan, Bell and Letcher counties.

Fairs will be held Feb. 27 at the Middlesboro SKCTC campus, room 209; Harlan campus, building two, and Letcher County at the county Extension building in Whitesburg.

Winners advancing to the Tri-County Science Fair on March 6 at the Southeast Harlan campus.

According to Rhonda Creech, SKCTC professor and division chairman, the contests will underscore and help to expand educational opportunities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics or (STEM), for all fifth graders within the college’s service area of Bell, Harlan and Letcher counties.

“We wish to have yearly fairs that support, encourage and recognize student excellence in science and engineering research. Our future mission is to build on this year’s learning experience and expand our annual competitions to include all middle school grades, 5 through 8,” she said.
