Hemphill

Clarification: Friday Night Pickin’ will continue as always. All Hemphill Community Center events will continue as posted. So come out and support us and local live music this Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, as we dance to the sounds of JD and Larry.

The community center is maintained by the community. We will not shut down. We had the community center in the ole school building 15 years before the Fleming-Neon Senior Program moved to our site. The senior program was maintained by the county. Sadly, the Letcher County Fiscal Court is closing the senior program which met at our site Monday-Friday during the daytime.

Our community center is and has always been a separate entity. We have had music there on Friday evenings for more than 14 years now. Hemphill Community Center was first organized in the 1960’s with the help of Vista workers. At that time the center was in the back of the old Hemphill Fountain.

Our present building has always had a history of live music even when it was a school. It has a rich community music tradition with the many awesome musicians living in our community. Great musicians such as Everett Meade have played at the old school building since its completion in the 1940’s. Fond remembrances of dancers and musicians, some of whom have long gone on, linger around the place. Come out and support your local musicians at this great ole site of mountain memories. For those who have moved away, please remember there is “no place like home” and be sure to come and visit us as often as you can. We long for your presence.

Hemphill Community Center schedule of events:

Getting Started Workshop/ Beginners Jam on Wednesday, Nov. 25, will be held from 5-6 p.m. Come sing and play with us.

Friday Nite Pickin’ on Nov. 27, 7:30 p.m., the day after Thanksgiving. JD & Larry will be returning for another great evening of country favorites. These guys are just awesome on the tunes of such country greats as Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Sr, and George Jones. What better way to work off your Thanksgiving dinner and leftovers than to dance on our dance floor to the music of these great musicians? Support live music and dance till your feet won’t dance no more. There are sweethearts among us just waiting to dance with you.
